i have put up some alt versions (radio performances) of some of these songs here if anyone is interested. http://www.last.fm/music/Ed+Askew/Mr+DREAM+%28+70%27s+radio+selections%29+mp3 This is a remastered and somewhat improved version of "ask the unicorn". I put this package together myself and sent it to Bernard Stolman of ESP DISK', who released it. The last song is new. ed askew ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALEX STIMMEL'S NOTES ON ASK THE UNICORN As the saying so often goes, there are little mysteries in life that can make it worth living. To the record collector (a little mystery in and of himself), some of the more consistent vagaries have revolved around an odd LP that was nigh-impossible to find (or find out anything about) by a seemingly odd man named Ed Askew. To the wordsmith, the fact that such a fractured, off-kilter album would be made by someone with the last name “Askew” is almost proof of divine providence. To the artist himself, his sole album’s unjust disregard and the ensuing fanatacism (not to mention high price tags) surrounding it must have felt more like a divine joke than anything else. Through both content and convergence, intent and intervention, Ask The Unicorn has become one of the pinnacles of what today is fetishized as “loner,” acid” and “outsider” music. Even for ESP, renowned for the abnormality of its roster, the album was a bit of a bastard child. Bernard Stollman,
