Orvis Otto : Dust Attracts its Kin GM004 Orvis Otto is a 4-piece collaborative recording between Mike Richards, Cory Bengtsen, Julie Edwards, and Brandon Siscoe. Recorded one frozen night in the basement of Cook Hall at Illinois State University. Orvis Otto is a live, improvisational project with no electronics, effects, or overdubs. Brandon, Mike, and Cory played acoustic guitars, grand pianos, vibraphones, kettle drums, chimes, various mallet instruments, and contributed to overall noisemaking. Julie played violin. This is a gentle, meandering recording with explosive moments of unnerving chime and kettle drum explosions. -Presented in two 25 minute compositions, for a total of 50 minutes of unbridled audio. Orvis Otto : Dust Attracts its Kin Reviews: A review of Orvis Otto: Dust Attracts its Kin: Orvis Otto Dust Attracts its Kin is a compelling improvisation, as the instrumentation lies outside of the expected jazz and jam band comparisons. I guess it has ties to folk, but I couldn't say how, and folk is not the first connection I would make anyway. I find it oddly melodic throughout,transient and arabesque at times though more so in the second stretch. Transient in a more thorough sense of the term as it is tied to trance, passing through, and affecting results beyond itself. This is how I imagine the affect of old Moroccan beatnik dens ala William Burroughs and Brion Gysin, though Orvis Otto is certainly less fatalistic. The interruptions of string screeching, ch
