NM calls it antipop. But then he says a lot of things. You don't want to believe them all. What's true is that this is a good debut album (put out originally under the name of Idiotchild) with a stripped-down three-piece lineup, leaving the songs to speak for themselves. And the themes covered? From broken relationships – “Sometimes I believe in your love in the same way that an atheist prays” (Aching), through the grandiose nightmare images of the city as devil’s playground – “Evil grins and strokes my thigh / And then expects me to take the blame” (Black Hole), nodding to a mood of funk playfulness on “(She Got My) Mouth Watering” and laughing outright at one more rejection on the acoustic groove of “Honey” – “She said, You ain’t the one who gonna get me goin’ / You ain’t the one to get my juices flowin’”, Idiotchild’s ‘Dumbdown’ pretty much covers the spectrum. You get a feeling from this album that these eight songs are just a dip into a world that’s rich in texture, colour and experience. And that this is just an introduction to that world.
