DRONE FOREST, "Drone Forest" CD - 2003 Drone Forest is many things, but it is not music. It was an internet ambient collective during the early 2000s. The first album came about after I had initially set out to do an all-star ambient album, with contributions from all of my friends. The original idea didn't pan out, but after a few months, I was still left with a small handful of very strong submissions. I found out that when you play back three or four different source CDs simultaneously, it adds up to something unique. This became the original recipe for the first Drone Forest release. I thought you could combine the sources in any order and they would always add up to something different and unique and yet still sonically similar. So, with that being said, I had the idea of bringing the contributors together on the internet, to work together in an ongoing capacity. Luckily, all of my all-stars said yes to joining the group. But even if they had all said no, their work was still a part of this first Drone Forest release, which was also the soundtrack for a 2-hour ambient video which was never really released. After the first Drone Forest release, I began to use Sound Forge exclusively. I stayed away from real-time playback. It was all on the computer. The sound of the group changed pretty drastically, depending on who assembled a particular album. Drone Forest is not music, it's anything but. Music has rhythm and melody, two areas I personally wanted to stay
