Album
"Draconian Times" is the fifth studio album by British gothic metal band Paradise Lost, released on 12 June 1995 through Music for Nations and Relativity Records. It features a blend of gothic rock and heavy metal elements, reflecting the band’s continued stylistic development during the mid-1990s. Two tracks from the album, "The Last Time" and "Forever Failure", were released as singles accompanied by music videos, and both achieved positions in the music charts. The album was later performed in its entirety by Paradise Lost on the live release "Draconian Times MMXI". It was also included, alongside "Shades of God" and "Icon", in a compilation box set titled "Original Album Classics". During the recording sessions for "Draconian Times", a song titled "Another Desire" was written but not included on the album or its reissues. Instead, the track was released as part of the single "Forever Failure". Critical reception for the album was generally positive. Daevid Jehnzen of AllMusic awarded it a score of 4.5 out of 5, describing it as a combination of "stark, oppressive goth rock and crunching heavy metal" and noting the band’s ability to create and sustain a consistent atmosphere. Ulf Kubanke of Laut.de gave the album a highly favourable assessment, referring to it as a balanced combination of contrasting moods and highlighting stylistic similarities to earlier gothic rock influences, including comparisons to the album "First and Last and Always" by The Sisters of Mercy.
