Album
Founded by Poppa Courgette in 2008, but with their roots firmly planted in 1938, King Courgette is a contemporary acoustic string-band equal parts Blind Boy Fuller and the Stanley Brothers. The repertoire consists of up-tempo banjo-driven tunes that may put you in mind of the Old Crow Medicine Show mixed with haunting mountain ballads and country blues. Percussionist Zucchini Bill also performs as part of theatrical rythmn ensemble Stomp - this is some of the most crazily sophisticated washboard playing you'll hear: and those strange slapping noises that accompany the band's version of Blind Rev Gary Davis's Candyman are the sounds of the hambone - basically a form of rythmic Appalachian self-harm. The strange thing is, these guys come from York which, to the best of knowledge, has no mountains at all.
