Desertshore is the third studio album by German musician Nico, released on December 20, 1970, through Reprise Records. The album incorporates elements from Western traditional pop, unlike its predecessor, The Marble Index. One of the songs, "Janitor of Lunacy", was composed as a tribute to her friend Brian Jones, who had recently passed away. The album's cover features stills from the film The Inner Scar by Philippe Garrel, in which Nico, Garrel and her son Ari Boulogne starred, and some of the album's songs were included in the film's soundtrack. Upon its release, Desertshore garnered a small cult following but largely went unnoticed by the mainstream public and large publications. In subsequent years, it received praise from critics, particularly from AllMusic and The New Rolling Stone Album Guide. Tiny Mix Tapes rated it five out of five, while The Village Voice gave it a less favorable rating of C.
