Will Oldham’s second Palace Brothers album eschews the willfully ramshackle sound of his debut for something much starker: an aching, minimal collection of home-recorded folk ballads performed almost entirely on just acoustic guitar. The loneliness at the heart of "You Will Miss Me When I Burn" and the playfulness underlying the hope and desire of "I Send My Love to You" gain even more power from this up-close feel, with Oldham's cracking tenor at the center of it all.
