about this album

This music is from Cuba, and is from the Afrocuban liturgical music of Lucumi ceremonies, in which the orishas (deities) are praised and lured down to the devotees. Lucumi is the Cuban manifestation of Yoruban religious traditions. Iluyenkori performed Afro-Cuban liturgical music for Lucumi (Santeria, or Regla de Ocha) ceremonies. This music is played on a set of three bata (drums), and usually accompanied by an akpwon (lead singer) and chorus, who sing to the deities, or orishas, so that they will come down and “mount” the devotees. In their third album, Iluyenkori added contemporary “Latin” and Western jazz sounds. However, their first two albums are an attempt at communicating the authentic liturgical music of Cuban Lucumi.
