The series of works ironically called "Computer Music" features sound materials taken from the audio libraries sold with the ME (Millennium Edition) version of Windows OS. Five works compose the series, each one using a single Windows library (the name can be found between brackets): Computer Music (Utopia); Computer Music (Jungle); Computer Music (Musica); Computer Music (Robotz); Email Sonata For Alex V. Cook. The composition of the first four pieces is based on an algorithm developed by the composer in a CPS environment (a software written by Niels Gorisse). This algorithm assigns each sound of a library to an independent pseudo-random function; the function decides the playing of a single sound in time (on/off). The sum of algorithmic choices about the presence or absence in time of the various library sounds constitutes a piece. The fifth piece (Email Sonata) uses exclusively the default Outlook Express (Microsoft) sound for signaling the incoming mail. Performed for the first time by the composer Alex V. Cook, the score prescribes a repeated post of email messages from an account to the same account (an autoreferential system). The musical results (greater or minor density in time of the sound) can vary according to the simultaneous presence of users on the server in a particular moment. All the pieces have a duration of exactly 3'. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
