Both released on LP as well as on CD, the Common Heart sessions were recorded in 2 days in 1987, but the CD reissue was released in 2000. Beirch explores 11 compositions, 2 of his own, and 9 tunes written by his friends, such as Andy Laverne, RonMcClure, George Mraz and Dave Liebman. His playing is effective and technical as always, and the explorations on each tune are very free-flowing and abstract, though with a sense of lyricism that makes for a entertaining but also very demanding listen.
