Album
Coltrane Time has a complex release history rooted in sessions led by pianist Cecil Taylor in the late 1950s (October 1958). The recordings were originally issued as Stereo Drive (UAS 5014), a jazz album credited to Taylor, before being reissued in 1962 under John Coltrane’s name by United Artists Records as UAJS 15001. A separate mono edition appeared as UAL 4014 under the title Hard Driving Jazz, credited to the Cecil Taylor Quintet. Although Coltrane and Taylor reportedly maintained a cordial relationship, tensions arose within the group, particularly between Taylor and Dorham, who openly objected to Taylor’s avant-garde approach. These interpersonal dynamics formed part of the context surrounding the recording and its later rebranding.
