Album
Civilian was Tovey's 2nd album under his real name released 13th June 1988, following the abandonement of the Fad Gadget moniker in 1984. Recorded in 1987 with drummer, Mark Jeffrey and producer, Rico Conning, the 9 tracks are mostly percussion-led and delve into a more abstract, uncommercial sound than the previous effort, 1986's Snakes & Ladders. A single, Bridge St. Shuffle, was released prior to the album's release in April 1988 backed by B-side, Brace of Shakes. The innovative video featured Tovey on the back of an amphibian in London's Isle of Dogs area. In the US, a promo single, The Brotherhood, was released in it's place. Following this release, Tovey became a fully-fledged acoustic folk artist, more in keeping with his socialist lyrics.
