CITIZENS (stylized in all caps) is the second extended play by Moroccan-Canadian singer-songwriter Faouzia. It was released on May 19, 2022, through Atlantic Records, following her first EP, Stripped (2020). The EP was officially announced on March 30, 2022, the same day the single “RIP, Love” was released. At the time of its announcement, Faouzia described CITIZENS as a “prequel” to her then-upcoming debut studio album, tentatively titled KING CITY, a project that was ultimately shelved and never released. The concept positioned the EP as a narrative and emotional introduction to a larger body of work that would later be abandoned. On April 28, 2022, Faouzia revealed the release date, tracklist, and cover art for the project. The artwork depicts her in a futuristic outfit within a vast glass cityscape, reinforcing the EP’s themes of surveillance, identity, emotional control, and dehumanization in a modern, dystopian society. CITIZENS was preceded by four singles. “Minefields,” a collaboration with John Legend, introduced the era with a grand, cinematic ballad centered on emotional distance and reconciliation. This was followed by “Don't Tell Me I'm Pretty,” a confrontational pop track addressing objectification and self-worth, “Puppet,” which explored manipulation and loss of agency, and “RIP, Love,” a dramatic, orchestral breakup anthem that served as the EP’s emotional centerpiece. Sonically, the EP blends cinematic pop, orchestral arrangements, and modern alternative
