New York-based vocalist/composer Fay Victor follows up her well-received 2004 live CD, Lazy Old Sun (Greene Avenue Music), with Cartwheels Through The Cosmos (ArtistShare AS 0061), her fifth recording as a leader and first for the ArtistShare label. Recorded without overdubs, the all-original program documents the vibrant and inclusive sound of her working quartet, the Fay Victor Ensemble, featuring guitarist Anders Nilsson, bassist Ken Filiano and drummer Michael “TA” Thompson. In creating their original compositions, Ms. Victor and her writing partner, Jochem van Dijk, believe the focus should be on the realization of the songs and the band interplay.Their songs balance meaningful lyrics with equally creative music, treat the vocalist and ensemble on equal terms, and incorporate a wide range of musical styles ranging from blues to rock to classic jazz to free improvisation. “As boldly inventive as she is bewitching, vocalist Fay Victor is a compelling presence on any bandstand.
