Capricornia is Midnight Oil's final studio album, released in 2001 in Australia and 2002 worldwide. To many, it showed a return to the strength of the Oils' most popular albums, diesel and dust, Blue sky mining and Earth and sun and moon. It was produced by Warne Livesey, who had already worked on Diesel and Dust and Blue Sky Mining. The name and concept of Capricornia was taken from the novel of the same name written by the Australian author Xavier Herbert. The name Capricornia refers to part of the Queensland coast and inland region around Rockhampton, which is close to the Tropic of Capricorn. Capricornia was finished in early 2001 and released in Australia later the same year, but the band's overseas recording contract with Sony Music/COlumbia had expired after the release of The real thing in 2000. The band eventually signed with the newly founded record label Liquid 8 in the US, where Capricornia was released on 19 February 2002. The US version contains one bonus track: • say your prayers - originally released in 2000 on the real thing (which did not see an official US release). Europe was the last region to see a release, in November 2002, after the band's management concluded a follow-up deal with their previous label, Sony Music/COlumbia.
