Camera Melancholia is a double album that serves as a tribute to Kerry McCarthy (1967-2021), Roy's partner for two decades and the mother of their two children. Kerry's life was marked by her professional contributions as a curator specializing in pictorial collections, with a particular focus on photographic material. Her 2014 cancer diagnosis ultimately led to her passing in early 2021. In her academic pursuits, Kerry delved into the world of visual culture, utilizing Roland Barthes' work to theorize about the enduring impact of images associated with Antarctic exploration in the early 20th Century. The album's cover art is a creation of Ronnie van Hout, a prominent artist from Aotearoa New Zealand known for his early graphic design work with Flying Nun Records. Ronnie shared a deep and enduring friendship with Kerry. The gatefold album includes the text for ten poems, each written as a heartfelt homage to Kerry McCarthy. These poems collectively capture the essence of her life, her contributions, and the enduring impact she had on those who knew her. The album, with its poignant instrumental compositions and artistic elements, stands as a memorial to a life well-lived and a person fondly remembered.
