Along with Hans-Joachim Roedelius, he was a founding member of such seminal bands as Harmonia and Cluster, groups whose work inspired virtually every major electronic music movement that followed. He released three landmark projects with the artist that defined ambient music, Brian Eno, and more than a half-dozen albums with Conny Plank, who was, for nearly two decades, Germany's most significant music producer.
