“Big Money” is the is the fifth studio album by Jon Batiste, and it marks a shift into something more intimate, rootsy, and stripped-down than much of his earlier, more flamboyant work. It’s a nine-song collection that runs a little over half an hour, recorded largely live in just a couple of weeks, giving it a raw, spontaneous, and very human quality. Instead of heavy production, the album leans on acoustic instruments like piano, fiddle, mandolin, and upright bass, creating a sound that blends folk, gospel, blues, reggae, funk, and Americana into what Batiste calls a kind of “New Americana.” Lyrically and thematically, Big Money explores the double meaning of its title: the chase for wealth in modern capitalism and the search for true value in love, faith, tradition, and community. Songs touch on themes of survival, spirituality, ecology, and the cost of chasing after material success.
