Billy Mackenzie, best remembered as founder member of Scottish band The Associates, committed suicide in January 1997 before "Beyond the Sun" was finished. The boss of Nude Records, Saul Gaulpern, oversaw it's completion, and he commissioned ornate piano, guitar and string section overdubs to add colour to the initial recordings.
