Wellington (NZ) dub and bass outfit Rhombus release their debut album, and it's pretty damn fine. Comprising of Thomas Voyce, Simon Rycroft, Imon Star (Ahmen Mahal) and the Mercinary MCs (Lotus, Mana, Tiki, Antsman and Raashi Malik), Rhombus have delivered an enterprising, individual and varied debut, effortlessly combining the "classic" pop infused beats and breaks of acts such as Stereo MCs, Bomb The Bass and Massive Attack, splashes of colourful and inventive Orb-like electronica , and the special deep dub vibe of Aotearoa. Featuring the huge b-net hit "Clav Dub", plus new single "Onward", this beautifully made record is a world class effort, deserving of serious national and international attention, particularly by the "downbeat" crowd. If you like Moby, Mr Scruff, St Germain, Zero 7 and other such "contemporary" pop delights - don't hesitate - you will find plenty of appeal in this stunning release. Recommended.
