'Asian Spa', the latest album from Iskelu, draws upon musical culture and influences from across Asia, but particularly focuses on the Himalayan regions of Tibet & Nepal, where the fusion of Indian, Chinese, S.E. Asian and Middle Eastern influences are at their greatest. Typically of Iskelu, this is an 'Ambient World' album that is able to musically engage the listener, as well as being relaxing, just as the highly successful 'Oriental Spa' did before it, in a way that many other albums in this genre fail to achieve. A sense of expectation and longing are key - felt within the building instrumentation, along with the continual motion of ambient journey. Global ambient textures draw you in, and with which Iskelu loves to gently surprise you. But, as you would now begin to expect from this artist, most prevalent of all is that 'epic' quality, in which Iskelu excels, combined with that same sense of journey. It's a quality that leaves you feeling as though you had just listened to a film soundtrack, or even been to the cinema or theatre, but forgot to open your eyes. 'Asian Spa' has all these elements you would expect from Iskelu - musical ideas that build and develop, often full of that same 'epic' quality. 'Legends Of The Lost Kingdom' is an excellent example of this - and is reminiscent in style of the incredible 'Sands Of The Kara Kum' from Iskelu's 'Desert Nation - Middle East' album.
