Recorded March-May 2005, John Howard teamed up with Bootleg Beatles guitarist Andre Barreau and Jesus and Mary Chain bassist Phil King to record this album at Dreamworld Studio in Pembrokeshire. It was Howard's first album of new material* to be released since his 1975 debut Kid In A Big World, the album which kickstarted his career again after it was reissued by RPM in November 2003. As I Was Saying was released in November 2005. * Howard had released the album The Dangerous Hours in July 2005, but that was a collaborative effort with poet/lyricist Robert Cochrane. As I Was Saying marked the first John Howard album to be released for thirty years where Howard wrote both the words and the music.
