Anyone who doesn't care much for rock, but is interested in the softer, more atmospheric side should check Jane Austen, Vista, Changing Seasons, The Era In Thaw and Final Chronicle of the Era. Getting Archaic ready for release has been a long and tiring process, not least because I wanted the push the boundaries of what I could do as a composer and write songs that were, perhaps, a bit more fully-realised than those on The Last Arboretum. Whether or not I succeeded is up to you. Whilst this is not at all essential to the album (and, if taken too seriously, can seem rather pretentious), I like to think of Archaic as a sort of instrumental concept album, depicting the rise and fall of an era of civilisation from beginning to end in an abstract/arbitrary way. Dark Ages and The First Coruscation show the end of the last civilisation, Jane Austen and Flashing Light Embargo represent cultural foundations and fallacies respectively, Archaic and Vista show the firm establishment and zenith of the new era, Changing Seasons and The Era in Thaw show transience, Oh My, Miranda... shows underlying violence or legal deficiencies, and Good Morning/Final Chronicle of the Era close by representing the start of the next era and the official termination of the last. The arc/arch of "archaic" shows the rise/fall parabola, and I prefer to think of Archaic as construction then deconstruction, more than the detail
