One is providing one of the most exciting "exotica" tracks, "Tiana Tche (The Jungle Roars)." Recorded on 35 mm film in the Perfect Presence Sound series, it is supposed to be audiophile quality, beyond even the loud, bright sound of most Mercury records of the period. The name "African Sounds" is something of a misnomer, as the music is African themed but the orchestration is big band with rock elements. Percussion (bongo and orchestral) is strongest in "Tiana Tche" and Galt McDermott's swinging "African Waltz" (the Cannonball Adderley classic) but never dominates as in a Command album. Stevens' greatest talent is adhering strictly to melody but using all parts of the band to embellish with his idea of African sounds. This and a jaunty spirit throughout make it very much like a great Les Baxter album. Compared to Baxter's Jungle Jazz, in fact, African Sounds covers the less-traveled territory of Afro-themed pop and rock.
