In the early 80’s Rick and Andy shared a house for a time on the South side of Palo Alto, and most of these recordings come from that time and the time after that when Andy moved out but still returned to record songs with Rick in the make-shift living room studio. Experimentation was the rule of the day, or would have been if there had been any rules. The harmonizer was a favorite effects unit as well as the always-useful delay units. Some of these recordings were multi-tracked using a 4-track recorder, and others like “Statues” and “Immaculate Conception” were recorded live in the living room. “Zrubient One AM” is so named because this track was played on the local KFJC radio station after midnight during an extended interview on Boris Darling’s late-night program.
